Importing a CSV file into Microsoft Excel

  1. Open a blank worksheet
  2. From the Data menu, choose Import External Data.
  3. This leads to a sub-menu; choose the first item Import Data.
  4. A window opens in which you select the file to be imported in the usual Windows way.
Select Files of type Text files(*.txt, *.prn, *.csv, etc.) and click on Open.
  5. A new window, called Text Import Wizard - Step 1 of 3 will appear.
Ensure the button Delimited is selected and click Next to move to step 2.
  6. In the Step 2 window, tick the delimiter box Comma and ensure all other boxes are not ticked.
In the Text qualifier box ensure the double inverted comma symbol " is selected. Click Next.
  7. In the Step 3 window you must ensure that each column is to be treated as text. Do this by selecting each column in turn with a single mouse click, and then selecting the Text button for that column. Click Finish.
  8. You are then given the option of creating a new worksheet with the imported data, or else adding it to the blank sheet you already have. Select which and click OK and you will have the codes, complete with leading zeros, in your spreadsheet.
