Recovery definitions

Different schemes have, historically, had different procedures for the central processing and storage of reports of birds which have been ringed and subsequently encountered again. The EURING Data Bank only holds data for birds which are regarded as 'reportable'. For example, some schemes have minimum distances, or times between ringing and finding before a live recapture of a bird will be handled centrally.

The conditions for being reportable are given in the 'Recoveries reported' column below.

DER Germany (Radolfzell) All reports of live birds more than 10 km from ringing place or more than 4 weeks after ringing. All dead recoveries.
DEW Germany (Helgoland) All subsequent encounters of birds except for live reports on the same day and in the same place as ringing.
DKC Denmark (Copenhagen) Older data: All dead recoveries.
All live recaptures of birds found more than 50 km from the ringing place and more than 1 month after ringing.
Recent data: All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
DKK Denmark

Older data: All dead recoveries.All live recaptures of birds found more than 50km from ringing place and more than one month after ringing.
Recent data: All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
ESA Spain
(San Sebastian)
All dead recoveries.
All live recaptures of birds found more than 50 km from the ringing place or more than 1 year after ringing.
ESM Spain

ETM Estonia All dead recoveries.

All live recaptures of birds found more than 5km from the place of ringing except for a few special cases (Storm Petrel 20km; Mute Swan, Canada Goose (40 km); common waders (30 km); most gulls (40 km); Sand Martin (10 km).)
GRA Greece All dead recoveries. All live recaptures more than 5 km from ringing place or more than 3 months after ringing. All resightings of colour-ringed birds, or reading of metal rings in the field, up to a maximum of 4 records per month.
HES Switzerland All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
HGB Hungary All information available from all individuals ever reported, i.e. no restrictions according to distance, time elapsed, species, or any combinations of those features.
HRZ Croatia All dead recoveries.
All reports of birds more than 10 km from ringing place or more than 30 days after ringing.
IAB Italy All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
ISR Iceland All dead recoveries.
All reports of birds at least one day after ringing, except for some special cases (some colour-ringing and local movement projects including Whooper Swan, geese, some waders and gulls).
KZA Kazakhstan  
LIK Lithuania All subsequent encounters of birds except for live reports on the same day and in the same place as ringing.
LVR Latvia All dead recoveries. All reports of birds by somebody other than the ringer. All reports of birds more than 10 km from ringing place or more than 3 months after ringing.
MKS Macedonia  
MLV Malta All reports of dead birds. All reports of live birds caught over 2 hours after ringing.
NLA Netherlands All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
NOS Norway All reports of birds already wearing a ring.
PLG Poland  
POL Portugal All subsequent encounters of birds except for live reports on the same day and in the same place as ringing.
ROB Romania  
RSB Republic of Serbia All dead recoveries.
All reports of birds more than 1week after ringing.
RUM Russia  
SFH Finland All dead recoveries.
All reports of birds more than 10 km from ringing place or more than 3 months after ringing.
SKB Slovakia All subsequent captures or sightings of any ringed birds.
SLL Slovenia  
SVS Sweden All reports of all birds by someone other than the ringer.
